gonna make it out alive
simon/yoko, 487 words, pg

Out of all the men she thought she would kiss (once, she had wanted that number to stop at Kamina, and then after Kittan she swore she wouldn't kiss anyone again) Simon had to be at the top of that list.

Yet here she was, letting him push her against the wall and kiss her. Chaste, like all her kisses had been, and that thought is enough to have her wrap her arms around his neck and stand on the tip of her toes (he was taller than her now, and sometimes she was still surprised by it) and kiss him back, like she was trying to crawl inside of him. Maybe she was- but the only thing she was really thinking about was how she didn't want to compare him to Kamina or Kittan.

Not, she thought, that this meant anything. She hadn't seen Simon in two years, and for all she knew, he was still grieving over Nia. Not that she blamed him- even though she hadn't seen Nia in seven years, the knowledge that her friends were out there and safe was enough. Some days, the loss of everyone spent it's time hanging around and no matter what she did, Yoko couldn't shake it.

Like everything, this probably meant more to her than it did him.

"Yoko," he said against her lips, and she closed her eyes, resting her head against his. Yoko clasped her hands on the nape of his neck. "Yoko."

"That's my name," she muttered softy, but grinned. She opened her eyes and was relieved to see that he was smiling back. She brushed the side of his neck with her thumbs, grinning at the way he shivered. "What was that for?"

"Missed you," he said honestly.

She raised an eyebrow. "We're the type of friends who kiss when they miss each other now? If that's the case, Leeron is so jealous of me right now and he doesn't even know why."

Like she intended, that made him laugh. Funny, she hadn't realized how gorgeous he was until now. Until now, he had always been Simon; one of her closest friends, her brother in arms. Not Simon, funny and gorgeous and a good kisser.

"We could be," he said, but she knew that he didn't mean it. Yoko smiled sadly.

"No," she said, "We couldn't. You love me, Simon, and I love you too, but not like we did-"

Simon sighed. "Yeah, I know. Do you think we could have?"

Yoko thought about it seriously. If it hadn't been for Nia and Kamina- "Yeah, I think we could have." Yoko smiled sadly. "We would have been good together."

Simon smiled back at her. "We would have," he agreed.

When he kissed her again, she let this one stay soft and gentle, just the brushing of his mouth against hers. A goodbye, she knew.

She was right. She never saw him again.
