getaway_machine and me, cause this is my other otp. mal/kaylee, 298 words. pg, cause hello, i'm at school. mostly written cause kaylee is demanding a voice in my head now. will most likely be taken down to rewrite when i get home, but for the moment, it is what it is.
Mal doesn’t talk about the war at all.
Kaylee is pretty sure that he doesn’t even discuss it with Zoë, unless he has no other choice. It’s not that she blames him- Kaylee wouldn’t want to talk about the bad parts in her life either. She preferred to let them go and focus on the good bits.
Too bad Mal didn’t seem capable of moving past that. The war still had as much of a hold on him as it did when he was in it, and she could see it in the dark circles of his eyes and the way his shoulders are hunched when he thinks no one is looking.
She can’t help but want to see him happy. Inara had the possibility of making him happy, but Kaylee had never meant two people more scared of each other. Their dance was elaborate and pretty, but they stepped on each other toes more often than not for Kaylee to think that it was any good for either one of them.
Without warning, she came up beside him to kiss his cheek, hoping for a smile.
“What was that for, little Kaylee?” Mal asked, confused, but the corner of his lips were turning upwards, and the indescribable look that was in his eyes turned into something more playful.
“Just because I love my captain. That and Serenity need new parts,” Kaylee said brightly, even as he placed his arms around her shoulders.
“So, you only get all sweet when you need something. Women,” he scoffed. Kaylee smiled softly, and he kissed her forehead.
Mal doesn’t talk about the war, but Kaylee can’t find herself minding much. Mal had Zoë to share war stories with- Kaylee just wanted to see him smile more often, that was all.
