Don't Take This Ship Down
PG-13, 750 words
Doctor Who/Firefly crossover- Rose/Jayne, Serenity crew
Jayne isn’t anything like the Doctor.
For one thing, he makes his interest in her loud and clear. Even though Mal smacks him for the lewd comment (one that she’s not going to even repeat- that’s how dirty it was. Jayne was different from Jack too- Jack flirted, but he was all about charm) she can’t help but be pleased, even as she’s blushing.
She knew that the Doctor loved her. She’s always known that- the Doctor loved everything and everyone. It’s just been a long time since she felt wanted.
She smiles, and bites the tip of her tongue. He raises an eyebrow at her, but she doesn’t say a word.
Jayne is huge. It’s all muscle though, and muscles that she gets to stare at often, since he likes working out shirtless. Kaylee, though completely infatuated with Simon, likes to look as much as Rose does. Zoe rolls her eyes and laughs at the both of them.
Rose likes Zoe, likes her no nonsense, no bullshit attitude. She likes all of the crew, actually- she took to them in a way that she hadn’t thought that she would- thought that the loss of the Doctor and Jack and her mum and her not Dad and Mickey would keep her from moving on. But they keep her grounded- so to speak.
Kaylee nudges her knee. “You want him, don’t you? You should do something about it- you’re pretty, and Jayne likes sex well enough- he’s not going to tell you no.”
It still surprises her sometimes, that Kaylee- mostly sweet and innocent Kaylee- will randomly say something like that. She knows that the Doctor looked at her the same way though, so it passes quickly. ‘Always the good girls,’ Jack used to say with a teasing grin. She just smiles at Kaylee, wide and friendly.
“Not sonic enough,” River says from the other side of Kaylee.
Rose expects that to hurt, the off hand mention of the Doctor, but instead, she just laughs.
She's not surprised when the weeks start turning into months, and she knows she's not going anywhere. She doesn't mind- even though she's not much use when they have to do work that's not exactly legal, she's made her use to Serenity. At least, the Captain doesn't complain about having her on, and as far as she can tell, none of the crew resents her, not even Jayne, though she thinks that has a lot more to do with the fact that he's sleeping with her than anything else.
"Jayne ain't exactly the faithful type, you know," Mal told her one day, when she was watching him clean his guns. Jack never would have let her watch.
"I know. Wasn't expecting him to be- I'm not in love with him," she replied honestly. Mal raised an eyebrow at that.
"You don't strike me as the type to settle, Rose."
She had just shrugged, "We don't know everything about each other Mal."
"True enough," he said easily. Then- "You ain't on the run from Alliance, are you?"
She just laughed.
In the end, Rose had come to love the TARDIS has much as she loved the Doctor. It had been her home, if only for a short while.
And now, she loved Serenity just as much as she had loved the TARDIS. She belongs- it was clear in the way Mal took care of her, like he did with Kaylee, River, and Zoe- though, the latter was only when she let her. And once the Captain accepted her as one of his own, the rest did too. Things weren't the best, but they were good. She was better.
"Are you happy here?" Kaylee asks, the two of them washing plates together.
"Yeah. I love it here," Rose replies, a little shocked when she realizes that it's true. She's happier than she's been since that day when her life with the Doctor ended. She had been right when she said that she had died- that part of her had, anyway. She wasn't the Doctor's plus one, anymore, but a part of Mal's crew, but that was just as good.
Kaylee bumps her shoulder affectionately, and Rose smiles and bumps hers right back.
"I'm glad," Kaylee whispers.
Rose is too- glad that she follows strangers, glad that she messes with things that nearly have a 'do not touch' sign on them.
One part of her life is over, but that's fine- this one is just beginning.
