five times kaylee said 'i love you'

warning for a possible lack of canon (i haven't watched in ages) and no capital letters. i got lazy. i just wanted to write kaylee, what can you do.
first boy kaylee had grappled with had been this gangly, awkward, pimply faced boy, a year older than her. he was sweet though- he held her hand when they went out, and brought flowers for her every time it was fancier than usual. her mother adored him. she was always gushing about that sweet boy kaylee was seein', and was practically planning their wedding. her friends told her often how jealous of her they were, that she was lucky to have someone that loved her like that.
the sex had been messy- she wasn't expectin' that many fluids- and painful- he hadn't been very gentle. still, he looked at her with something approaching awe, and she couldn't help her smile.
"love you," she said, and at the time, meant it.
it's why her heart was broken two weeks later, when she caught him kissing lily anne, soft and sweet as any kiss he had ever given her.
simon hadn't even been doing anything special. river had fallen asleep next to him, her head on his shoulder. it was a sight she had seen a thousand times before, but there was something about the look on his face. love at its finest, and it made her smile wide. and she knew, already, that she loved him, but she hadn't told him.
"hey," she whispered, poking him in the leg with her toe. he looked over at her, and that look hadn't left his face at all. "i love you."
he smiled back at her, and was still smiling when she leaned over to kiss him. she was glad that there was enough love in him for her too.
it's not that kaylee liked girls, not like that. she's just a fan of pretty things, and well, inara is the prettiest girl in the 'verse. she's all soft curves, and smooth hair and a smile that broke hearts. and it's not just that inara's gorgeous. she was kinder and smarter than anyone else on serenity, and well. if she was inclined that way, inara would be her first choice.
she told inara that much one night, a little tipsy and giggling.
"oh, mei mei," inara said, smoothing back kaylee's hair. "no, you wouldn't."
"right. captain would kill me. he thinks you're shiny," kaylee whispered, burying her face in inara's neck. she smelled nicer than anyone else on serenity too.
inara gave her that same smile she always did when they talked about mal, small and mostly sad. it made kaylee want to hug her, so she did. inara sighed, and rested her cheek on the top of her head.
"i do love you, though," kaylee admitted, moving in closer.
"you love everyone, kaylee," inara laughed
"that's not a bad thing," she protested.
inara must have heard a hint of doubt though, since she kissed the top of kaylee's head. "no. it's the best thing about you."
she knew how mal saw her. he called her little kaylee and mei mei often enough to leave no doubt in her mind about it.
so she said 'i love my captain', and it wasn't like she was lying. it wasn't her fault that he just didn't know how much.
she said it to serenity as often as possible, laying a gentle hand on the wall. she didn't need a reason.
