firefly drabble. mal/river/jayne, of sorts. pg-13ish, and for meagan. 390 words. this sucks a lot, but then again, i can't write them very well. title is from a bowie song.
River is a tiny little thing, and Mal is afraid that Jayne will snap her in two. It’s a fear that he knows that Simon shares- Mal can see it in the Doctor’s narrowed eyes and the way he stiffens when he sees them together, and he does all if it even when he’s around Kaylee.
Mal has known Jayne for a good while, and men like Jayne even longer. They would own and use it, and then, when they got tired of it, throw it out carelessly. River deserved better. She didn’t need to be-
“Already broken. Not just in twos, or fours, like Simon thinks. I shattered like broken class. Jayne puts the pieces back together. I’m a puzzle- one hundred pieces, though we’ve lost a few,” River said, putting Serenity on auto-pilot. She turned in her chair to look at Mal, to gauge his reaction.
“I just worry about you, little darling. Men like Jayne-“ he began.
“Jayne’s good. Makes me feel whole. I make him feel good. In all sorts of ways,” River said, grinning.
“Then that’s all that matters,” Mal replied. Her grin was infectious, and Mal found himself smiling right back at her.
“We want to feel real though,” River suddenly admitted, “You see us- how we are. You could keep us together.”
Mal frowned, but River was touching his cheek gently.
“Darling- between you and Jayne, I’m definitely going to the special hell,” Mal said.
River crossed the space between them, and went down to her knees. Mal glanced up, not wanting to deal with the images he was getting from her being down there. She smiled, resting her hands on his knees.
“I like how you see me. I bet you’d like how Jayne sees you too,” River said.
“Now, River, can’t go telling all of the ape man’s secrets,” Mal grinned. River pinched the inside of his thigh, and he gave out a yelp of surprise.
“Don’t talk about my Jayne like that,” she ordered. “My man. Could be yours too,” River said, leaning up gracefully to kiss him. Mal couldn’t help but return it.
River was a tiny thing. She was strong and he knew it- but he was so afraid of breaking her in two. He knew that Simon worried about the same thing.
He wondered if Jayne did.

I should try writing Kaylee first. Cause I've never written Kaylee before.
