um, i haven't written hp in like eight months, i think. i apologize. i am though, totally going to win this mini-challenge the bff and i are doing.
Tonks can't say that she's surprised.
Remus stands in front of her, listing off the reasons why he can't stay with her anymore- too old, too poor, too dangerous, and he's not even through talking and she gets tired of it.
"Just stop, Remus. Please," she whispers.
He stops, and she can see the regret written all over his face. Finally, finally, she hears what he's never said.
I'm not enough for you.
She just wished that he let her decide.
The next two weeks go by in a blur- too many Death Eaters, too much death. Tonks is numb to it all, numb to the concerned looks being sent her way.
The beginning of the third week, Kingsley takes her back to his place.
"Shower," he tells her, "And then you need to go to sleep."
"I-" Tonks begins, but Kingsley shakes his head, and places his hands on her shoulders.
"You're going to be useless to us if you keep going like this, Tonks."
She nods.
"All right. You know where everything is."
Kingsley was waiting for her, once she got out of his shower. If he was bothered by her just being in a towel, he didn’t say anything. It was almost comforting, the way that he doesn't avert his eyes. He just looks right at her, and smiles.
"Hey," he says, "There are some clothes on the bed for you."
"Thanks." She's glad that they're muggle clothes- it's familiar, and reminds her of her father, and nothing more.
Kingsley turns around politely, and she pulls on the clothes.
"Where am I staying?" she asks.
"You can steal my bed, I'll take the couch." He gives her another smile, and turns. He kisses her forehead lightly, and is nearly out the room when she calls his name.
"You can stay. Please."
He looks at her, and she resolutely keeps her face blank. Kingsley nods though, and she smiles.
The rest of the third week goes by in a blur but none of them hurt. Remus avoids her, but that's all right.
Kingsley stars bringing her tea in the morning, and she wonders who told him how she likes it, or if he's got some sort of sixth sense about it. They work together, but she finds herself going to his each night, her things gradually start appearing at his house, and if he's got a problem with it, he doesn't say anything.
Molly asks her how her new relationship is going, and Tonks can only laugh.
The fourth week, she breathes a little easier, and when she sees Remus, it's not a punch to the gut.
She lives easier.

Date: 2007-05-29 08:54 pm (UTC)Oh man, I freaking love Tonks. I even love Tonks/Remus, when done correctly, but I love anything done correctly. But even if I didn't like Tonks, I'd probably wouldn't treat her badly, cause I got issues with how fandom treated her.
