you're strange and you're beautiful

harry potter- lily/remus
Though she's never told anyone, she fell in love with Remus Lupin long before she had ever fallen in love with James.
Well, maybe love hadn't been the right word. She had taken one look at him- frail, lonely, but kind. She wondered how he ever fell in with James and them. Even though she could tell that James and Sirius weren't as close to him as they were each other; the other three had some fierce loyalty when it came to Remus. It was a little endearing, and very clear that they were hiding something.
When she realized that, she realized that she was doomed. A crush, love, infatuation- whatever she labeled it, all it meant was that she wanted to figure him out.
He had been her first kiss. His too, she suspected, but at fifteen, she didn't think either one of them would readily admit it. It had been good- nothing earth shattering, but good. Solid and real, until he pulled away, the guilt written clear on his face.
She understood. That loyalty went both ways, it seemed. "It's all right. I just-"
"I understand."
She studied his expression, and maybe he thought he did. She didn't think so. Instead she cupped his cheek.
She never told James, and as far as she knew, he never found out. She didn't have anything to feel guilty about- she couldn’t even stand James then-, but when she lies next to James, she understood the low churn of guilt he must have felt.
