Heaven keep us apart

medie's "Because We're Awesome" Drabble-a-thon.
Buffy knows she’s dreaming.
It’s kind of obvious, given the field of brightly colored flowers, the picnic that’s been set up, neat and perfect.
And, you know, her dead mother.
“Mom?”
Her mom looks up and smiles, and it takes all of Buffy’s willpower to not fling herself at her and just cry.
“Sit down honey,” she says, patting the empty space on the blanket.
Buffy does, and for a while, they’re silent. She busies herself by piling her plate with food- there’s watermelon, and even if it’s not real, she’s going to enjoy it. She hasn’t had any in a long time and-
“Big day, tomorrow,” her mom says softly, after she’s taken a bite out of her sandwich. “Big changes.”
“I know,” Buffy agrees. The watermelon is really red.
“Are you scared?”
Buffy nods, because if she can’t admit that to her mom, then no one else is really left to her. Her mom sighs softly, and sets both of their plates to the side. When she opens her arms, Buffy accepts the unspoken invitation, burying her face in her neck.
She manages not to cry, but just barely.
“I wish you were here,” she whispers, ignoring the way her voice breaks on the last word.
“Me too. But you have to wake up now. It‘s time.”
::
When Buffy opens her eyes, Spike’s holding onto her tightly.
It’s a poor substitute.
