You Who Are My Home
Kingdom Hearts II | Sora/Kairi/Riku | 1,225 words | PG

Kairi didn’t doubt him at all. She took the Keyblade from him with only a second's hesitation, and that seemed more out of awe of the actual weapon than fear of him. She nodded, her expression determined. It's one that he was more used to seeing on Sora, but it suited her well.

"This time, I'll fight," she said, almost to herself. "You know Sora's completely hopeless without us. Come on Riku!"

For a quick second, he just watched her, the way she charged into battle without a thought. Not for the first time, he thought about how beautiful she was.

Once all of this is over, if they get to go home, he was going to have to make sure Sora didn't let her forget it.

He knew that Sora had been looking for him. That was something he hadn't needed to be told; Sora, if you were his friend, would go to the end of the hundreds of worlds to find you. So Riku knew that Sora was looking for him, that Sora missed him.

Still, he wasn't expecting Sora to go to his knees and start crying. His stomach twisted even as he told Sora to pull himself together, told him that he didn't want to be found. It was still true.

Now that they're back together again though, he couldn't say that he regretted them finding him. That was a surprise- a good one. He had so many regrets when it came to Sora. He refused to have anymore. He was going to make things right.

They were home. A part of him didn't really believe it. When he woke up, he expected to be wherever he's managed to find a place to sleep. It made for terrible nights- he wasn't sleeping well, and it only took Sora and Kairi a few days to notice it.

He couldn't hide anything from them for too long. Riku wasn't sure why he bothers.

They climbed into his room the next night, long after his parents were asleep. He left the window open; he knew that they were going to show up. Sora all but fell on top of Riku when he jumped on the bed, grinning brightly.

"God, you're heavy," he complained, but didn't bother to push Sora off him.

Kairi stood at the foot of his bed, smiling at them. Riku raised an eyebrow at her and apparently that was all the invitation she needed. She crawled in on his other side, resting her head on his shoulder. She placed her hand on his chest, right over his heart.

Sora's hand joined hers and their fingers intertwined.

Riku slept through the night and didn't wake up once.

Wakka was the first one to say something about Riku embracing darkness. Selphie frowned at him, looking like the only thing she wanted to do was hit him over the head. Tidus didn't say anything, but it was clear from the look on his face that he agreed with Wakka.

Kairi punched him.

The lunch room went silent and Wakka was staring at Kairi like he had never seen her before. To be fair, the rest of the room was looking at her like that too.

Riku had just never seen her look so angry before.

"If it weren't for Riku, we would be dead. He's done just as much as Sora and Sora couldn't have won that battle without him!"

She didn't add anything else- she just grabbed Riku's wrist and led him out of the cafeteria, her head held high.

(Later, he told her that Wakka was right, that he had betrayed them.

"No, you didn’t. And even if you had, you've more than made amends for it, Riku. At any rate, Wakka better be glad that Sora's sick today, because if he had heard it, Wakka might not be walking."

He only stared at her. Kairi smiled gently and pulled him into a hug.)

King Mickey liked to send them to different worlds. As long as there was darkness, there would be Heartless. Riku knew that this fight would never be over.

Sora and Kairi knew it too.

He sighed as the last Heartless disappeared, the heart flying into sky. Riku watched it until he couldn’t see it anymore. When he looked back down at Sora, he had his keyblade resting on his shoulders. He was staring off into space, so Riku took the time to look at him. Sora was skinnier, if that was possible, and there were dark circles under his eyes that hadn't been there before, even after they defeated Xehanort.

Sora was exhausted. Riku wondered if he looked the same.

"Hey," he said, waiting until he had Sora's attention, "Are you alright?"

Sora smiled, even though it seemed strained. "Why wouldn't I be?"

He and Kairi shared a look. She gave him a slight nod and took Sora's hand. "Come on Sora. Let's take a break."

Sora didn't disagree with her; he just nodded meekly, which made Riku worried. He slung an arm over Sora's shoulder, and the three of them started walking towards the nearest inn.

He hadn't been expecting it. The three of them were fishing for the bonfire that they, Selphie, Tidus and Wakka (forgiven long ago) were having. Sora and Kairi were being silent, which happened more frequently than it did years ago, so Riku wasn't worried much.

Sora's fish fell out of his hand, hitting the water with a soft 'plop'. The sun shined off its scales, but Riku only saw it for a second before Sora had flung himself at him. Riku caught him easily- he had a feeling that he always would.

Before Riku had even realized what he was doing, Sora had his hands on his face and was kissing him. If it could be called that- it was just a press of Sora's mouth against his own before he pulled back, his expression carefully blank.

"Kairi-" he began, and then stopped. He didn't know what else to say after that, but it should have said it all. Sora and Kairi were everything to each other. He didn't have a place in that.

She stepped up to them, and grabbed their hands, placing them over each other. She didn't move her own. Suddenly he remembered- four years ago, how she had done the exact same thing. He remembered that even then, they both knew that it was him.

"Sora and I talked about it," she admitted softly, "All of us or nothing, Riku. We don't want to do this without you."

"But-" he said. Kairi stood on her tiptoes and kissed him, hard and demanding. It was to shut him up, he realized.

She pulled away first, but kept her forehead against his. "All or nothing," she repeated.

"It was all I wanted," Sora said softly, "Was to find the both of you."

And- oh. He let go of their hands, only to wrap his arms around them both. They returned the embrace easily, Sora's face buried in his neck while Kairi's cheek was warm against his chest.

I love you both, Riku thought, but didn't say it aloud. There had been enough confessions tonight- there would be more later. He was going to make sure they had all the time in the world.

I really, really, really need to play this game. You made me love this pairing without even being 100% clear on who they are, because you and your writing is amazing like that <3

You should totally play it! I am obviously biased, but it's fun and awesome and I love most of the characters in it. The game even made me care about Goofy and Mickey Mouse for a bit, and I've never liked either one of them much.

And thank you! ♥
